While thinking about materials for certain rooms within your new home is important, finding the perfect material for the foundation/base of your home is just as vital. This can be a hard decision, however, as other factors like durability and strength are crucial to a material that is going to keep your home standing for years on end.
To determine which material is best to make your custom home out of, check out the information on each material that we here at Lions Den Construction have posted about below.
Clay Bricks
One of the most classic, common materials for home builds in North America, clay bricks work as an amazing material for homes in a number of different situations. One of the greatest benefits to clay bricks is that they are incredibly hard, making them highly durable for years to come. You can find buildings that were made hundreds of years ago with clay brick that are still standing to this day.
They are also incredibly easy to replace if one gets broken/cracked/chipped. In no-time, a brick can be chipped out of its place and a new one can be slipped right in.
The main negative that comes with this material, however, is the lack of interior insulation. Since this material is solid at its core, the only way to insulate this material is by putting up a wooden frame in addition to the layer of brick.
Stone
Like clay bricks, stone comes with the same advantages and disadvantages. The main difference between stone and clay bricks, however, is that stone is usually more prone to breaking down overtime. Water issues are quite common with stone as well. Once water seeps into stone enough, the stone can expand and crack. If you want to use stone, be sure to use bricks made out of stone and make sure it isn’t the primary part of your foundation.
Wood
As time goes on and the housing market continues to fluctuate, wood is becoming more and more common in today’s world of custom home builds. There are a few main reasons why this material is becoming more common:
- Wood is cheap. Since this material is super abundant within both the US and Canada, it’s a lot more affordable than a material like stone.
- It’s more flexible. When we’re talking about natural disasters, wood goes a long way in handling the impact of earthquakes or shifting grounds in general.
- Wood is easy to insulate. Since these walls are hollow, they are super easy to fill with insulation.
